movie review: ju-on

so i’m not sure if you guys know this or not, but lots of movies that come out here are remakes of movies from japan. like the ring (or “ringoo”) came out in japan first and so did kill bill. i haven’t seen the japanese version of the ring but my friend rich says it’s pretty awesome. anyway, it has to be scarier than the one with naomi watts! lame. everyone knows that american remakes of foreign stuff are never any good. i’m not sure why they even bother. hello, doesn’t anyone remember “coupling?”

anyway, the sarah michelle gellar movie the grudge is actually a remake of another japanese movie called jew-on. my posse and i headed to our local art-house theater to check it out.

the filmmakers made a really good choice to not fill the whole movie with a bunch of dumb, fake-looking special effects. instead, they build up some serious suspense. at the beginning of the movie, there’s this one scene where this japanese girl walks around this house for like 10 minutes. i know it sounds really, really, really boring, but i was on the edge of my seat the whole time! and then this cat hisses at her and everyone in the theater was totally freaked out.

so let me guess your next question: “what is this movie about?” well, i wish i could tell you. i must not have been paying close enough attention because i’m not really sure what was going on. i know that everyone kept finding a cat and turning into some kind of monsters or ghosts or something and made this FREAKY clicking noise. and this one creepy little ghost boy kept haunting everyone. and there was this one guy that was a detective that i think may have been a ghost too. anyway it was really confusing mainly because all the actors looked the same.

but there were some really cool parts. let me just say this: JAPANESE SCHOOLGIRL ZOMBIES! i bet that woke you up, eh?

anyway, i’m pretty excited to see the SMG version so i can figure out just what was going on. i just hope they don’t screw it up by taking out the schoolgirl zombies!

anyway, rich, i totally want to watch ringoo. can you loan me your copy? will it play on my dvd player?
